Dissertation Information

The qualifications to submit Thesis for each course is as following:

Graduate School Doctor’s Degree Course
  • 1. Those who acquired more than 30 credits who have registered for more than 6 semesters
  • 2. Those who passed the foreign language test and general graduation examination
Graduate School Master’s Degree Course
  • 1. Theology – Master of Theology (Th.M.)
    • Those who have registered for more than 4 semesters and acquired more than 18 credits. Those who have not graduated Master of Divinity (M.Div.) must have registered for more than 6 semesters and acquired more than 30 credits
    • Those who passed the foreign language test and general graduation examination.
Special Graduate School Master’s Degree Course
  • 1. Graduate School of Theology
    • Master of Divinity (M.Div.)
      • Those who have registered for more than 6 semesters and acquired more than 76 credits
      • Those who passed the foreign language test and general graduation examination.
  • 2. Graduate School for Counseling and Welfare – Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology (M.A.C.P.), Master of Arts in Social Welfare
    Graduate School for Interpretation – Master of Arts, Interpretation (M.A.)
    • Those who have registered for more than 4 semesters and acquired more than 24 credits
    • Those who passed the foreign language test and general graduation examination.

Thesis Guidance

  • 1. All professors, associate professors, assistant professors who have doctor’s degree and full-time teachers from our university can be advisors for Dissertation Thesis.
  • 2. External examiners of the thesis for doctor’s degree must be full-time or senior researcher assistant professor who has doctor’s degree.
  • 3. The thesis guidance professor will be decided by consultation between the President and the department head professor.
  • 4. The guidance of thesis should be under 5 cases per professor (including Special Graduate School).
  • 5. The guidance of thesis should be more than 3 times.

Dissertation Thesis

Thesis Guidance Advisor

All full-time professors at the university can be thesis guidance advisor by the assignment of the Dean of Graduate School. However, external professors can be assigned as needed.

Appointment of Thesis Guidance Advisor

The application for appointment of thesis guidance advisors will be 4th semester for the General Graduate School (Doctor’s degree), 3rd semester for the General Graduate School (Master’s degree), 3rd or 4th semester for the General Graduate School (Master’s degree), 5th semester for Graduate School of Theology, and 3rd semester for the Graduate School of Counseling and Welfare. Students must apply for a thesis guidance professor after consultation with a professor the student seeks to have guidance from, and must receive approval form the Dean of Graduate School after the Head Professor conference.

Assignment of the Thesis Guidance Advisor

The number of students for guidance for each full-time professor should be limited to under 5, for an effective thesis guidance. However, there may be exception under the Dean of Graduate School’s approval, if it is necessary with the circumstances of the department.

Change of Thesis Guidance Advisor

When a student wishes to change the thesis guidance advisor due to an unavoidable reason, he/she must submit application for change through the existing advisor and receive approval from the Dean of Graduate School.

Qualification to submit Dissertation Thesis

Qualifications for submitting dissertation thesis is as follows:

  • 1. A person who has acquired certain number of credits as stipulated in the school regulations and has a total average GPA of 3.0/4.5 or higher.
  • 2. A person who has passed foreign language examination and general examination.
    • Master’s degree : M.Div.(English/Greek/Hebrew), M.A., M.A.S.W., M.A.C.(English) Th.M.(English)
    • Doctor’s degree : English, A second language (Classical language), and a general examination.

Thesis proposal

  • 1. Master’s degree : Each student must report a proposal to the advisor professor.
  • 2. Doctor’s degree : Each student must give a presentation on the proposal in front of Thesis examiners consisting of department professors and obtain approval from more than half of the examiners.
  • 3. Each student who writes thesis must submit Pledge of Plagiarism Ⅰ.

Thesis Guidance Fee

Each student who wishes to receive thesis guidance must pay thesis guidance fee every semester or before the main examination for thesis.

Thesis Guidance Period

A student must receive thesis guidance for more than 3 semesters for the doctor’s degree, and more than 2 semesters for master’s degree and they may extend the period, in order to receive sufficient guidance.

Organizing an Examination Committee

The examination committee for the dissertation thesis is as follows:

  • 1. The examination committee for the dissertation thesis will be decided by the Graduate School Association. However, the Head of examiners will be appointed by the Dean of Graduate School.
  • 2. The Dean of Graduate School appoints the examination committee of 3 persons for the master’s degree and 5 persons for the doctor’s degree, including the thesis guidance advisor, through the Graduate School Association. However, 1 to 2 external personnel can be included for the committee for the doctor’s degree to give a more objective perspective to the examination.
  • 3. The Head of examiners has an equal voting right as an examiner and must report the result of the thesis examination to the Dean of Graduate School within a certain period. However, the thesis guidance advisor cannot be the Head of examiners.

Thesis examination and Oral Presentation

The examiners of the Master’s degree dissertation thesis only examines the thesis and the examiners of the Doctor’s degree dissertation thesis also examines oral presentation.
The dissertation thesis examination is done within a certain period of each semester and is done as follows:

  • 1. Temporary copies of dissertation thesis (3 copies for Master’s degree, and 5 copies for Doctor’s degree) must be submitted to the Faculty of education and training office 2 weeks ahead of the examination date.
  • 2. The examination of the dissertation thesis is focused on feasibility of the subject, research method, accomplishment, contribution, and thesis structure.

Examination Decision

The main examination of the dissertation thesis is evaluated out of 100 points. It is considered passed if you receive more than 80 points from all the 3 examiners for the master’s degree of the Special Graduate School, from all the 3 examiners for the master’s degree of the General Graduate School, and from all the 5 examiners for the doctor’s degree.

Re-examination

If the student did not pass in the examination of the dissertation thesis, he/she can make appropriate correction and amendment to have one more chance of re-examination after one or more semester.

Due date for submitting Dissertation Thesis

The dissertation thesis for the master’s degree program must be submitted within 9 years from the student’s admission and for the doctor’s degree program within 11 years. If the course period is 3 years for the master’s degree program, the dissertation thesis must be submitted within 10 years. This period includes leave of absence and expulsion from the school.

Submission of Thesis

When a student wishes to change the thesis guidance advisor due to an unavoidable reason, he/she must submit application for change through the existing advisor and receive approval from the Dean of Graduate School.

Thesis Standard

  • 1. A student who passed all examinations, must submit 10 copies of the thesis bound according to the format prescribed by the school.
  • 2. One copy of the submitted thesis must have signatures from all members of the examination committee.
  • 3. The thesis guidance advisor must be chosen by consultation between the President and Head of the department.
  • 4. A thesis CD and a Consent to use the thesis (prescribed form) must be submitted together with the thesis.
  • 5. A Pledge of Plagiarism Ⅱ stating that the thesis does not contain any plagiarized content must be submitted together with the thesis.

‘dCollection’ must be done after the main examination and before binding the thesis.
